Precision turning at PREC
2026-10-05
In the manufacturing of precision components, even a small dimensional deviation can affect the assembly capability and functionality of the product. Therefore, turning operations require combining appropriate equipment selection with quality control throughout the production process.PREC performs turning for pin headers, PCB drill bit bodies, faucet components, and locating pins using materials such as SUS304, brass, and SK steel. With a system of NC automatic lathes, automatic lathes, and inspection equipment, the company meets machining requirements according to the characteristics of each component.
Machining various component groups using SUS304, brass, and SK steel
The groups of turned products at PREC serve various needs, from pin headers and PCB drill bit bodies to faucet components and locating pins. Each component group has specific requirements for shape, dimensions, and surface finish. For pin headers or locating pins, assembly dimensions must be controlled according to the drawing. For PCB drill bit bodies and faucet components, the machining plan also needs to be suitable for the design characteristics and usage requirements of each product. PREC machines materials such as SUS304, brass, and SK steel. Differences in material properties require appropriate selection of cutting tools, cutting conditions, and machining sequences, forming the basis for controlling dimensions and surface quality.
PREC's Turning Process
Drawing Analysis and Technical Requirement Identification
The machining process begins with clarifying the requirements on the drawing, including shape, dimensions, material, tolerances, and surface roughness. Locations directly affecting functionality or assembly capability must be identified to select appropriate machining and inspection methods. For components with multiple steps, grooves, holes, or threads, the sequence of operations needs to be considered from the outset. Thorough preparation at this stage helps connect customer requirements with the production process.
Material and Workpiece Preparation
Workpieces are prepared according to the required material and dimensions, and are compatible with the machine's fixturing or feeding method. Controlling incoming materials and preparing suitable workpieces is fundamental for subsequent stages, helping to minimize errors before production begins.
Machine Selection and Machining Setup
PREC owns a system of lathes from CITIZEN, TSUGAMI, and NOMURA, including NC automatic lathes and automatic lathes. Depending on the component's characteristics, the production plan is developed with operations such as face turning, outer diameter turning, step creation, hole machining, grooving, or threading. The selection of machines, cutting tools, and workpiece holding methods must be appropriate for the technical requirements of each product. For NC machines, the program and machining parameters are factors that need to be set to control the cutting process.
Dimensional Control During Production
PREC conducts periodic inspections every 2 hours to monitor product dimensions during machining. This activity helps detect deviations that may arise when cutting tools wear out or machining conditions change. In parallel with periodic inspections, critical dimensions are inspected on all products. This is a direct control point for characteristics that must meet the technical requirements of the order. When an error is detected during a periodic inspection, products within the affected range are fully inspected for classification and processing. Combining periodic inspections with 100% inspection of critical dimensions helps PREC control quality during the production process.
Component Finishing with Post-Turning Operations
Depending on product requirements, post-turned components may require additional finishing operations to meet dimensional and surface quality specifications. PREC is equipped with 2 SANYO MACHINERY SMT-18 centerless grinding machines and 1 OKAMOTO surface grinding machine, supporting the machining of surfaces requiring finishing by grinding. The combination of turning and grinding expands technological options for components with corresponding requirements. The finishing sequence is selected according to each product, rather than applying the same series of operations for all components.
Final Product Inspection and Packaging
After completing all machining operations, PREC inspects finished products according to drawings and agreed-upon technical criteria, including dimensions, surface quality, and related characteristics. For inspection purposes, PREC is equipped with a Mitutoyo QM-M353 3D coordinate measuring machine, KEYENCE image dimension measuring system, 3 Nikon measuring microscopes, and an ACCRETECH surface roughness tester. The inspection methods and equipment are selected to match the component's shape and the specific inspection requirements of each product. After inspection, products are appropriately packaged to minimize impact, scratches, and protect quality during storage and transportation to customers.
