What is Hairline in Mechanical Processing? Applications of Hairline Surface Treatment
■ What is Hairline?
In mechanical processing, hairline is a surface treatment method that creates fine, parallel, and uniform scratches (grains) in a specific direction. The treated surface features small, continuous lines, providing a consistent and visually clean appearance.
Hairline is typically performed using a hairline finishing machine, abrasive belts, or specialized grinding wheels to create the grain on metal surfaces such as aluminum, stainless steel, or steel.
■ Characteristics of Hairline Surface
Hairline surfaces have the following characteristics:
- Fine, uniform scratches (grains) in one direction
- Reduces the visibility of tool marks after CNC machining
- Increases consistency among products
- Does not reflect as strongly as a mirror-polished surface
Compared to other treatment methods like bead blasting or polishing, hairline creates a surface effect with a clear direction.
■ When is Hairline used?
In practice, hairline finishing is applied in the following cases:
- Improving appearance
Concealing minor scratches after CNC milling
Creating a uniform surface before delivery
- Preparation for subsequent surface treatment
Before anodizing (for aluminum)
Before coating or plating
- Design requirements
Products requiring a hairline finish according to drawings
Creating consistent aesthetics
■ Hairline in the Semiconductor and Precision Machining Industries
For components in semiconductor devices, appearance is not only about aesthetics but also related to quality control.
Hairline finishing helps to:
- Reduce the visibility of tool marks after machining
- Increase surface uniformity before anodizing
- Support color deviation control
However, hairline is not always applied. Some parts do not require it, such as those with:
- Low roughness (small Ra)
- Non-directional surfaces
Therefore, the choice of hairline depends on technical requirements and customer inspection standards.
Hairline is an important surface treatment method in mechanical processing, helping to improve appearance and create consistency for products. However, to meet high technical requirements, especially in the semiconductor industry, hairline needs to be controlled as part of the entire production process.
Seiko Industry Vietnam Co., Ltd. (SIV) is a 100% Japanese-invested precision machining company, a subsidiary of Akita Seiko. In addition to its CNC machining capabilities, SIV can perform surface finishing processes such as hairline finishing, meeting the stringent standards of the semiconductor industry.
With specialized equipment (FUJIKIKO hairline machine) and strict quality control processes, SIV ensures:
- Uniform and stable surfaces across batches
- Excellent appearance control before and after treatment steps
- Meeting the demanding requirements for semiconductor device components
