Overview of large-scale post-weld heat treatment furnace PWHT
Large-scale PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment) furnaces are equipment used to perform post-weld heat treatment processes for large metal components such as pressure vessels, pipelines, steel structures, and industrial equipment. After welding, residual stresses and microstructural changes often exist in the material, which can reduce strength or cause cracking during operation. PWHT furnaces help heat and cool materials according to controlled cycles, thereby reducing residual stresses and improving the mechanical properties of the material.
■ Features
- Ability to process large components, weighing tens to hundreds of tons
- Precise temperature control by zone, ensuring uniform heat throughout the entire part
- Integrated temperature data recording system and heating cycle programming
- Can be designed as fixed or mobile furnaces depending on production requirements
- Suitable for various materials such as carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and heat-resistant steel
■ Specifications
- Working temperature: approximately 300°C to 750°C (depending on material and standards)
- Furnace capacity: custom-designed, can accommodate equipment tens of meters long
- Heating system: electric resistance or gas/oil burners
- Temperature control accuracy: ±5°C to ±10°C
- Control system: PLC or dedicated programmable controller
- Number of temperature measurement points: multiple channels (thermocouples) for simultaneous monitoring
■ Applications
- Post-weld heat treatment for pressure vessels and storage tanks
- Equipment fabrication in the oil and gas, chemical, and energy industries
- Treatment of large steel structures in industrial construction
- Applications in manufacturing boilers, turbines, and heat-resistant equipment
Large-scale PWHT furnaces play a crucial role in ensuring weld quality and the reliability of industrial equipment through precise temperature control and the processing of large-sized components.
■ Large-scale Post-Weld Heat Treatment Furnace Capability at Lilama10
Lilama 10 has invested in a large-scale Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) furnace system to meet the technical requirements for large structures and pipelines. The system allows for simultaneous processing of components over 7 meters in length, suitable for heavy industrial projects and export requirements.
The furnace measures 9,800 × 7,600 × 7,600 mm and is equipped with an automatic control system and imported equipment from the UK and South Korea.
Large-scale PWHT technology has been directly applied by Lilama 10 in the project to manufacture pressure pipelines for a pumped-hydro power plant in Australia, with the system located approximately 800 m underground and a capacity of 2,000 MW.
