Transfer molding is one of the precision molding methods for thermosetting resins. It is a process where material (preform) loaded into a heated pot is pressurized by a plunger, melted and fluidized, then filled into a heated mold cavity and cured. It possesses characteristics intermediate between compression molding and injection molding, and is particularly excellent for integral molding of complex shapes or with insert parts such as metal terminals. Because the shear stress on the material is relatively low, it allows for the production of high-precision molded products with minimal flash, while suppressing damage to fiber-reinforced materials. It is widely applied in applications requiring high dimensional stability and reliability, such as electrical and electronic components (IC packages, connectors) and automotive parts.
