What is coconut shell activated carbon? Why is it widely used in water and air treatment?

2026-09-29

In water treatment, wastewater treatment, deodorization, and raw material purification systems, activated carbon is one of the most commonly used adsorbent materials. The treatment efficiency of activated carbon depends on the raw material used for production, pore structure, activation level, and the specific characteristics of each type of carbon.

Among raw materials such as coal, wood, bamboo, or agricultural by-products, coconut shell is highly valued for its ability to produce activated carbon with a well-developed pore structure and good hardness, suitable for various water, air, and industrial treatment applications.

What is coconut shell activated carbon?

Coconut shell activated carbon is a carbon material produced from coconut shells through carbonization and high-temperature activation processes. First, carbon-rich raw material is processed under oxygen-limited conditions to form char. Then, the char is activated, commonly with high-temperature steam, to form a system of pores and capillaries within the material. This system creates a large surface area, allowing molecules in water or air to adhere to the material's surface through adsorption.

Why is coconut shell suitable for activated carbon production?

Coconut shells have several characteristics suitable for activated carbon production:

  • Good mechanical hardness: helps prevent carbon particles from breaking down during operation, especially in continuous filter columns or tanks.
  • Well-developed pore structure: creates a large contact area and good adsorption capacity for many small molecular compounds.
  • Readily available raw material source: coconut growing and processing regions in Vietnam, especially Ben Tre and the Mekong Delta, generate a source of coconut shell by-products that can be utilized for carbon material production.

Applications

Thanks to its adsorption properties, coconut shell activated carbon can be used in many fields:

  • Water and wastewater treatment
  • Gas treatment and deodorization
  • Textile dyeing
  • Food industry
  • Oil refining, thermal power, and oil & gas
  • Mining and gold recovery
  • Other industrial applications depending on technical requirements

In water and gas treatment, adsorption efficiency also depends on pore size (the size of the pores), the type of substance to be treated, contact time, flow rate, and the saturation level of the carbon. Therefore, it is necessary to select the appropriate type of carbon for each system instead of relying on a single parameter.
